Serine, cystine, cysteine, methionine, pyruvic acid, glucose and to a lesser extent arginine, are actively fermented by washed suspensions of Cl. sporogenes. Glucose was the only substrate from which Hz was evolved.

The bacteria have to be cultivated in the presence of glucose in order that the Hz-activating catalyst be present. This indicates that the enzyme reversibly activates the reaction : 2H + Hz.
