Il arrive à l′inspecteur Morse de se faire gronder par son supérieur hiérarchique : “Au fond, pour un grand détective, vous êtes plutôt farfelu.” Il est vrai que Morse aime autant jeter un coup d′œil sur les derniers numéros de Playboy ou Penthouse que s′absorber dans Swinburne, Thomas Hardy ou Le Déclin de l′Empire romain. Et que si Richard Strauss et Wagner sont ses musiciens favoris, Morse ne dédaigne pas pour autant les grands orchestres de Duke Ellington et de Count Basie. Enfin, si notre héros a ses habitudes dans des pubs comme le White Horse, l′Eagle ou le Child, il lui arrive aussi de fréquenter le bar du classieux Randolphe Hôtel.
