Decine e decine di persone scompaiono ogni anno nel deserto del Sahara. I loro corpi non vengono quasi mai ritrovati e si pensa che le sabbie del deserto li abbiano inghiottiti o le fiere se ne siano nutrite... L'autore immagina - e questa fantasia potrebbe realizzarsi negli anni a venire, perchè è stato il sogno di parecchi grandi costruttori - che parte del deserto del Sahara sia stata artificialmente inondata e sia stato così creato il "Mare Nuovo", il mare del deserto. I protagonisti di questo racconto - due giovani innamorati - sorvolano questo grande lago chiamato il Mare Nuovo, ma il loro apparecchio ha un guasto e si inabissa in un vortice formato da una depressione del fondo. L'apparecchio viene risucchiato e trasportato lentamente su una corrente nelle caverne del sottosuolo. In queste caverne sotto il Sahara vivono prigionieri, molti uomini scomparsi nel deserto, di ogni razza e nazionalità. Il racconto è la storia di questi uomini, della loro lotta per tornare nel mondo, per sottrarsi alla tirannide del popolo segreto, strani esseri che, sepolti nelle loro caverne, non hanno mai visto la luce del sole.
