✦ Synopsis
The most recent theories on the inhibition of hydrocarbon flames by halogen containing compounds are critically reviewed : Mill's ionic theory, Creitz's theory and the theory of inhibition by HBr. New results from simultaneous experiments on halons-H2-air and halons-air mixtures have given a new insight into the mechanism of extinction of hydrocarbon fires by these compounds. More precisely, the new mechanism takes into account some valuables processes which are present separately in the three mentioned hypothesis.
