✦ Synopsis

A layered elastic model is adopted in the paper for the analysis of soil layering e!ects on the results of Cone Penetration Testing (CPT). Analytical solutions associated with the layered elastic CPT model and obtained via numerically integrating the fundamental singular solution for layered elastic solids due to the action of a body force concentrated on a circular ring. The soil layering e!ects on the CPT tip and friction resistance are examined in detail using the layered elastic CPT model. These examinations include parametric studies, in#uence of soil compressibility, comparisons with theoretical results given in the literature, veri"cation with experimental data and simulation of "eld trial results. The examinations lead to the conclusions that the layered elastic CPT model can be used to analyse soil layering e!ects on CPT results and to estimate relative shear modulus strength of soil layers.

This paper presents a general one-dimensional (1-D) finite element (FE) procedure for a highly non-linear 1-D elastic visco-plastic (1-D EVP) model proposed by Yin and Graham for consolidation analysis of layered clay soils. Detailed finite element calculations are carried out in order to study the mechanical response of a compliant layer sandwiched between a rigid cylindrical flat punch and a rigid substrate. The disturbed state concept (DSC) model, and a new and simpli"ed procedure for unloading and reloading behavior are implemented in a nonlinear "nite element procedure for dynamic analysis for coupled response of saturated porous materials. The DSC model is used to characterize the cyclic behavior of
