É sobretudo uma aventura com a linguagem: além de fundar a narrativa, a linguagem é também o instrumento que, com seu rigor, desorganiza um outro rigor, o das verdades pensadas como irremovíveis. Lançado em dezembro de 1975, Lavoura arcaica foi imediatamente considerado um clássico, "uma revelação, dessas que marcam a história da nossa prosa narrativa", segundo o professor e crítico Alfredo Bosi.
