Abstract
The lattice parameters of solid solutions of niobium in nickel have been determined up to 8 atom percent niobium. The plot of lattice parameter vs composition is a straight line over the range investigated. A method based on atomic volumes of the solutes and solvent, assuming a linear relationship between concentration and atomic volumes, is capable of predicting the lattice parameters of nickelβniobium solid solutions with reasonable accuracy.
The paramagnetic susceptibility of nickelβniobium alloys has been measured up to about 1500 Β°K for the first time. This paramagnetism is describable by a modification of the CurieβWeiss law, by addition of another susceptibility contribution, π΅~a~. The quantity π΅~a~, which generally has been assumed to be independent of the temperature, was found to increase with increasing temperatures. Niobium in nickel does not follow the VOLKOVβCHECHERNIKOV correlation between π΅~a~ and the valence and concentration of the solute metal in nickel.
