Abstract

By assuming that the number of conduction electrons is not perturbed by a slight hydrostatic pressure, we have computed the nuclear energy shift of the 14.4 KeV gamma ray of Fe^57^ resulting from compression in an iron crystal. The atomic wave functions are those of the free atom but they are no longer allowed to extend to infinity: they are limited to the Wigner‐Seitz polyhedron. For a pressure of 3000 kg/cm^2^ the calculated shift is 0.83 Γ— 10^βˆ’10^ eV as compared to the experimental value of 1.12 Γ— 10^βˆ’10^ eV obtained by POUND.
