✦ Synopsis

Ever since the Group of Latin-American Acousticians (GALA) was founded in C6rdoba it has tried to foster the development of acoustics--a scientific and technical discipline of great socio-economic impact which has, unfortunately, been almost undeveloped in Latin America until recently. Through enquiries and during Latin-American congresses of GALA (the Sixth has just met in Mexico) the lack of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate curricula in this field has emerged clearly, in spite of many years of effort to foster its institutionalisation in Ibero-American universities and technical schools. This was the main reason for seeking the support of the Organization of American States in holding a seminar or series of invited lectures in which a group of scientists of the highest level from various parts of the world covered, in a limited number of lectures, the fundamental themes in acoustics related to the design of the human habitat. The scientists were asked to present the current state of knowledge and today's trends in research in their own fields.

The goal of this type of meeting is two-fold: on the one hand the participants are made familiar with the themes and methods of advanced research and on the other it is hoped to awaken interest in systematic research, so often frustrated for lack of incentive in the universities and in industry, due to lack of curricula and economic incentive. In this seminar 75 Applied Acoustics (16) (1983)--
