✦ Synopsis
the public sector and a fall in the share of credit allocated to agriculture. It highlights the importance of giving more attention to institutional barriers and existing market failures that limit the access to credit of small farmers.
The last chapter looks into the role of off-farm employment with reference to Honduras, showing how its relative importance varies according to the farm size. It also discusses the implications this may have in the design of agricultural policies. Some of the points raised are interesting but the standard reached is clearly below that of the previous chapters. Both Chapter 1 and 8 tend to be less focused and articulate than the rest of the book.
Overall this book is a useful tool kit of policy analysis. It will be valuable to students and practitioners doing applied work on the economics of the agricultural sector in developing countries, especially in Central America.
