Abstract

The functions of the visual cortex (VC) were interrupted in anesthetized and paralyzed hooded rats with KCl (3M Baker) applied topically and single unit recordings were performed on lateral geniculate cells. Responses of geniculate cells to diffuse 1 second flashes were tested prior to and following cortical inactivation. The results indicated: (1) a differential decline of β€œon” and β€œoff” responses; (2) a shift of excitatory and inhibitory periods in some units; (3) a modification of spontaneous firing; and (4) the corticofugal influence in rats is comparable to rabbits, suggesting a similar organization in both species.
