✦ Synopsis

This volume represents the proceedings of a symposium of the INQUA Commissions on Loess and Paleopedology held at the XIth INQUA Congress in Moscow in 1982. There are 30 papers in the monograph (all in English) grouped under the headings "Morphogenesis and Catenary Associations of Loess Paleosols," "Lithological Properties of Loesses in Different Climatic Zones," "Stratigraphy and Dating of Loesses and Paleosols," and "Aspects of Utilization of Areas Covered by Loesses." Most of the papers deal with loess at various sites in Europe and Asia (including the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania, France, and

China), although some papers cover broad regions or are topical or theoretical. One of the advantages of the volume is that information is presented on regions poorly known in English-language literature. Many of the pa-pers, however, are essentially expanded abstracts and present little data.

The volume will be of interest to geoarchaeologists working in loessic areas of Europe and Asia, although none of the papers deal specifically with geoarchaeology. Many of the papers summarize some current interpretations of loess stratigraphy, geochronology, and paleoclimatic implications. The discussions of dating methods will also be useful to some.
