Contrary to what the Southampton group suggest, data in the literature clearly support the importance of excision margins in minimizing local recurrence rates after breast-conserving therapy. All surgeons dealing with breast cancer should be aware of this fact, Any technique, such as specimen-orientated radiography, that increases the complete excision rate at the first operation appears to be of value.
