✦ Synopsis

We discuss the conditions under which free-electron-lasers can be operated in the X-ray region by employing an intense laser wave as undulator. We analyze the e-beam and laser beam parameters suitable for the realization of this type of device and conclude that they are not far from the present technological capabilities.
