✦ Synopsis
The first electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements for the divalent aluminum radical HAlOH with sufficient resolution to confirm its non-linear geometry are presented. Isotopic substitutions permitted the study of HAlOH, DAIOD and HAI"OH in neon and argon matrices at 4 K. The radicals were generated by the reaction of laser vaporized alummum wrth HZOcBr. New electronic structure information was obtained from the nuclear hyperfine interactions (A tensors) of H, D and 170(1= S/2). Configuration interaction (CI) calculations of the isotropic and dipolar components of the A tensors were conducted for comparison with these experimental results for both the cis and tram conformers of HAIOH.
