β¦ Synopsis
The (5698-\AA) band of (\mathrm{HfO}) has been reexamined using wavelength-resolved fluorescence excitation techniques. Spectra were recorded at a resolution of (0.03 \mathrm{~cm}^{-1}). Previously, this band had been assigned to the (B^{1} I I-X^{1} \Sigma^{+} 0-0) transition. Analysis of the rotational structure indicated that the excited state electronic assignment for this band should be changed from (B^{1} \Pi) to (b^{3} \Pi_{1}). Based on this revision, accurate term energies for the triplet state manifold are reported. Ligand field theory calculations were used to suggest electronic configurations for the excited states of HfO. @ 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
