Laser-excited emission spectra and decay curves of Cr3+ m gahnite-type glass-ceramics are compared with those in gahnite crystals. The nature of the CT'+ sates is determined from the positions of the emission and excitation peaks and from measurements of the decay times.

โฆ Synopsis
Laser excitation at different wavelengths was carried out on Cr'+-doped transparent glass-ceramics of composition (mole%) Ac(58.7S10Z, 16.7A120,, 17.8MgO,6.7T10~,0.03Cr~O,)andBc(49.1 SiOz, 19.7Alz0,,21.9Mg0,6.0TiO~,3.2Zr0,,0.03 Cr201), and in synthetic crystals of composition MgA120, (CT'+ ), Mg,TiO, (CrS+ ) and Mg, ?Ti,, ?Al, 604 (Cr)+ ). Analysis ofthe emission spectra, excitation spectra and decay curves at 4.4. K and room temperature reveals that Cr)+ is essentially situated on distorted single sites and in pairs exchanging Al'+ ions in the crystalline phase of glass-cerarmcs.
