✦ Synopsis
Laser-induced triplet excitons in the columnar crystalline and liquid-crystalline phases of an octasubstituted zinc phthalocyanine have been studied by nanosecond absorption spectroscopy. For low-energy excitation, exponential decay kinetics are obtained; the triplet lifetime is phase dependent (r=21.5 1s for the crystal. 5= 10.0 ps for the liquid crystal). For high-energy excitation second-order decay kinetics are observed. Triplet-triplet annihilation is more rapid in the liquid crystal than in the crystal by a factor of 13. The triplet exciton diffusion coefficient indicates that exciton diffusion is ten times more efficient in the liquid crystal than in the crystal.
