✦ Synopsis

The laser-induced plasma shock wa¨es and related ca¨itation bubbles on an aluminum surface underwater ha¨e been experimentally studied with a high-sensiti¨ity optical deflection system. The expansion of the shock wa¨e pulse duration, the positions where shock wa¨es attenuate to acoustic transients, the maximum bubble radii, and the bubble collapse center shifts ha¨e been determined experimentally. A high-pressure wall behind the bubble has also been obser¨ed with this deflection system.
