An experimental study is presented to evaluate the effect of partial laser surface texturing (LST) on friction reduction in piston rings. Tests were performed on a reciprocating test rig with actual piston rings and cylinder liner segments. A comparison was made between the performance of a referenc

β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
The laser heat treatment of piston rings is discussed. The hardened layer formed on the surface can increase the wearβresistance and hence the service life on the piston ring.
Compared with rings treated by chromiumβplating or molybdenumβspraying, the new technique of laser hardening of the piston ring offers many advantages, such as low cost, noble metal saving, no pollution, energy saving, simple working procedure, easy automation production, etc.
