✦ Synopsis
several comprehensive papers and reviews have been presented by very reputable scientists containing a high informative value and illustrating clearly the important zoological role which the arra plays. At least 65 species of Fishes, 128 species of Reptiles and Rodents with about 100 species demonstrate the great biological diversity of the region though not all groups have been considered adequately. Surprisingly no contribution on Birds has been included.
The published results of the symposium form an important basis for activities in applied fields in the area such as agriculture, medicine, environmental protection and animal conservation but d s o for those dealing with hasic science.
The data made available in this volume will support and stimulate forthcoming research in Middle Eastern Zoology. The text is illustrated with numerous instructive figures and tables. The rcl'erenccs of each chapter include nearly all important pnblications. All chapters are written in a clear and understandable st'yle in a correct English translation. As an overall evaluation the volume can be considered a very vali~ablc contribution t'o those interested in the biology of the Middle East or in similar arid ecosystems as well.
