โœฆ Synopsis

Substantial industrial development along the Scheldt estuary in the extreme south-west of the Netherlands has led to an increased demand for mater and electricity. In 1965 the authorities realized the favourable conditions prevailing for cotrbined sea water distillation and electric poHcr production. The initiative for commer:ial negotiations *as taken by the Electricity Board for the Province of Zecland. In October. 1966, Werkspoor-Amsterdam N.V. rcceked the order for 2 multi-stage fiash-ekaporating plants with a desigxd urti; capacity of 14JtIO rn3 (3.850.000 US &tons) of fresh water per day. Thcsc plants, beliewd to he the largest now under construction, are scheduled to start operation in Ucrotcr. 1968. This paper presents some background figures on Iocal conditions, as wei1 as a brief description of the design and layout of the plant.
