✦ Synopsis

Following the 17th Low Temperature Conference at Karlsruhe, FRG, a post-conference seminar was held on August 22, 1984. It was organized by Professor W. Heinz and hosted by the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre (KfK). This seminar was attended by almost 150 participants from 29 countries. Most aspects of superconducting magnet development and research on superconducting materials were touched upon, the invited papers covered the major areas of applications for superconducting magnets. Sixteen poster presentations were also included.

The morning session was covered by the five invited lectures. Their topics concerned the broad fields for application of superconducting magnet technology: as magnets in fusion research, lor large accelerators, st, perconducting turbogenerators, superconducting magnets tot n. m. r. spectroscopy and imaging and superconducting magnets for ve U high fields.

In the afternoon session the participants had the opportunity to visit the research facilities for low temperature technology and superconductivity at KfK. Recent results were reviewed in poster presentations. Most of the research and development at KfK is devoted to superconducting magnets for lusion devices. Other areas of magnet research, material devclot~n~enl and cryogenic engineering are also covercd, as dcscribed in tile Novcmber 1984 issue of ('l~l'OglJIli('%

Certain industrial processes (e.g. munitions manufacture) involve the generation of large volumes of waste with high nitrate concentration. Biological denitrification can be a very cost-effective means to deal with these wastes. and the hydraulic residence time. The mathematical model was tested exp
