✦ Synopsis

A large-bandwidth patch antenna with a ridge-shaped ground plate is introduced. The patch with an air substrate is excited by a coaxial probe which is stretched from the top of a ridge-shaped ground plate; thus, the probe inductance is reduced and broadband operation is obtained. Its measured impedance bandwidth of VSWR Υ…2 reaches about 90%, covering 1.75-4.62 GHz. Moreover, the proposed antenna has wide-beam characteristics. The design and the simulated and measured results of the proposed antenna are presented and discussed.
