We read with interest the article by Drs Eriksson and Granstrom regarding a randomized trial of appendicectomy versus antibiotic therapy for acute appendicitis (Br J Surg 1995; 82: 166-9), and compared their results to our own recently completed audit of laparoscopic appendicectomy in patients with proven appendicitis. The mean total hospital stay in our patients was 2 days, 50 per cent being discharged within 24 h, 75 per cent within 48 h and 90 per cent within 72 h of operation. Our patients were
