✦ Synopsis

Systems of land classification are discussed as important procedures in landscape synthesis. Existing systems are examined and found to have limited application because of their lack of functional integration of landscape/environmental components, their lack of focus upon the active components of the landscape and their limited ability to predict land capability and the consequences of environmental impact. An alternative procedure is suggested whereby process data can be used. The basics of the method are described and the system illustrated by reference to different environments. By adopting this approach the links between classification, capability assessment and impact assessment are more clearly understood.
