This is a comprehensive book on land use that can be used as a reference by advanced students in agriculture and by others working in the agricultural field. The information is well organized and set forth in an orderly manner. The book has 394 pages (7 chapters) with major emphasis being placed on landscape ecology, land conditions, and land evaluation. It contains numerous pictures, maps, tables, and diagrams to illustrate methods and techniques. References are made to about 400 different articles that were written by scientists from many different countries. Major emphasis is on land reclamation, especially irrigation and drainage projects with most of the examples coming from The Netherlands, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and a few other countries. A summary of the contents of each chapter follows.
Definitions and background information on land use are discussed in the first chapter (16 pages).
Chapter II, Land Use Surveys, covers principles of land use, various kinds of land use surveys, and modern survey techniques, including a discussion of the use of satellite imagery (18 pages).
Land utilization types are discussed in Chapter III, and include the following topics; general background information, agricultural land utilization types, typology of agricultural land utilization, and non-agricultural lm~d utilization types (31 pages).
Chapter IV, Land Resources, consists of a general introduction about the importance of land resources in land-use planning, including definitions, the effects of climate, geology and relief on land use, the importance of soil and water resources including methods of classification and evaluation, and other land resources important in land use planning (65 pages).
Landscape ecology and land conditions is the subject of Chapter V. The following items are discussed: (a) general background information; (b) landscape ecology; (c) land resources surveys; (d) land use requirements including land management, crop responses to management, land degradation and requirements of non-agricultural land utilization types; and (e) land conditions including a discussion on land qualities, land limitations, land improvement, and irrigation (103 pages).
Chapter VI contains a discussion of factors to consider in land evaluation. Definitions and background statements, actual soil suitability and soil suitability, potential land suitability, land evaluation classification including:
