Ophelia, a Lamplighter in Castore has a dangerous job: to light the lamps which ward offand, in many cases, destroythe fiends that lurk in the shadows. Armed with her gas-bags and fire-stick, she can keep the city illuminated and safe from the monsters that have claimed that dark, flooded undercity as their own.
Faulkner is a Blue Guard, married to Harriet who is pregnant with their first child, one that they have fought hard for. When his superiors request that he hand over his wife, however, demanding that the child within her must not be born, he puts aside the blue coat in the hopes of keeping his wife safe.
Nathaniel is only young, but hes already fallen in lovewith a girl he saw in his dreams. Smitten by this being who seems untroubled by the markings that mar his skin, he is drawn to her. But when his life, Ophelias and Faulkners meet, the citys very foundations begin to crumble, and all are left wondering:
