Lampedusa, 3 ottobre 2013, notte fonda, la scrittrice, sola in cucina, beve un caffè e sfoglia il giornale quando un bollettino radio le vomita addosso gli ultimi avvenimenti: un barcone proveniente dalla Libia è affondato a due chilometri dalla costa causando la morte di oltre 300 persone. Nella mente di Maylis di Kerangal, alla voce metallica della radio fanno da contrappunto le immagini di Burt Lancaster, ne Il Gattopardo, poi in The Swimmer. Il suo pensiero vaga e divaga dando vita a un paesaggio interiore insieme tragico e mitico e, passando per altre isole, per altre migrazioni, ricompone, come in un caleidoscopio, la Lampedusa attuale, ormai lontana dal mondo dorato del principe di Salina e indissolubilmente legata a quello e a altri naufragi. Con Lampedusa, l’autrice compie a suo modo una traversata notturna durante la quale interroga un mondo in decadenza dove i diritti umani cessano a un tratto di esistere.
