The super-volcano is awake and the race is on between the planet and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Four miles beneath the planet's surface, two tunnel-boring machines grind against the rock face of 40-foot diameter tunnels toward the magma chamber beneath Yellowstone National Park. The work is round the clock. They proceed a mile farther each month from subterranean stations that are much like man-made environments orbiting in the cold of space, and the workers are suited-up much the same.Six years before our story opens, a far older, yet simpler, geologic structure was discovered to the north, in the valley of the Madison River, next to the Yellowstone Caldera. Many millions of years before the birth of the planetary convector, heat from tectonic plate movement melted the Basalt in the crust. An immense void was created, now named the Madison Valley Abyss.
