Juillet 1209 : Dans la cité de Carcassonne, Alaïs, jeune fille de 17 ans reçoit de son père un manuscrit qui, prétend-il, recèle le secret du véritable Graal. Bien qu'elle n'en comprenne ni les symboles ni les mots, elle sait que son destin est d'en assurer la protection. Elle doit, au prix d'une foi inébranlable et de grands sacrifices, préserver le secret du labyrinthe, secret issu des sables de l'ancienne Egypte voilà plusieurs milliers d'années.
Juillet 2005 : Lors de fouilles archéologiques aux environs de Carcassonne, Alice Tanner, trébuche sur deux squelettes. Dans la grotte où gisent ces ossements, elle découvre un langage ancien, mais qu'il lui semble possible de déchiffrer, gravé dans la roche. Elle finit par comprendre, mais trop tard, qu'elle vient de déclencher une succession d'événements terrifiants. Son destin est désormais lié à celui que connurent les Cathares, huit siècles auparavant.
