✦ Synopsis

Knowledge about mother-to child transmision has recently progressed and allowed the development of strategies for the prevention of infant's infection. It is now well known that the risk of tranmission depends on mother's disease. When initially the transmission rate

was at 20 % in France ; now, with a large use of zidovudine (AZT) at the end of pregnancy, less than 8 % of the newborns are infected. In developing countries, where the prevalence is high there is a need for the development of specific strategies of intervention.
