Vers le milieu du XVIIe siècle, un garçon de quinze ans, Henry Morgan, natif du pays de Galles, s'embarqua sur un vaisseau qui allait à la Jamaïque. À trente ans, pour couronner ses exploits, il résolut de prendre d'assaut la Coupe d'Or, Panamá, la puissante ville espagnole.
Mais le désir de la gloire est comme le désir de la lune : pour l'éprouver, il faut garder une âme d'enfant. Après avoir conquis et incendié Panamá, l'âme enfantine d'Henry Morgan l'abandonna. Et quand plus tard il revint, vice-gouverneur de la Jamaïque, chargé d'honneurs et de fortune, il n'était plus qu'un homme qui s'ennuyait et craignait les scènes de ménage.
Ce roman d'aventures, passionnant, somptueux, profond, montre un aspect à peu près inconnu en France de John Steinbeck : celui d'un écrivain qui a un sens aigu de l'histoire et de la mer.
