โœฆ Synopsis

A form of string rewriting systems, known as L-systelils, are used to model the branching patterns of the red algal genus Dipterosiphonia (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae). L-systems provide a method of producing character strings from a set of production rules similar to those in grammars that have been used to study both natural and computer languages. They can be used to produce realistic looking computer graphic images of plants and have been utilized to describe branching patterns of inflorescences. We show that a set of production rules that describe the branching topology of typical Dipterosiphonia species can be modified in a minor way to obtain a set of rules describing the "reversed" branching pattern of D. reversa. An analysis of the L-system models for these species provides a plausible explanation for the mutation in the typical Dipterosiphonia branching pattern from which 19. reversa was derived.
