Hoewel haar toon meestal laconiek en registrerend is, hangt er steeds een onbestemde dreiging. Wortel zoekt in haar proza voortdurend naar grenzen, die ze vervolgens doorbreekt. Haar werk blinkt uit door humor, een scherp observatievermogen en het talent met weinig woorden veel te zeggen.
