Abstract
The anion of nitrilotriacetic acid is capable of forming 1:2‐complexes as well as 1:1‐complexes with the cations of the rare earth metals. The 1:1‐complexes have stability constants of the order of magnitude of 10^11^ which increase slightly but steadily from La^3+^ to Lu^3+^. The constants K~2~ of the 1:2‐complexes on the other hand increase from 10^7.37^ for La^3+^ to 10^9.35^ for Gd^3+^; this strong increase for the first half of the series of the rare earth metals is followed by a slight decrease for the second half of the series.
