Abstract

Proton NMR Knight shifts are measured in the paramagnetic state of RH~2~ (where R = Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Tb). The data are interpreted in terms of the effective hyperfine field at the proton site, being equal to −16.7 × 10^4^ A/m for the Pr, Nd, Gd, and Tb dihydrides and −7.96 × 10^4^ A/m for SmH~2~. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in SmH~2~ is also measured. The anomaly observed at 9 K is attributed to antiferromagnetic ordering. Analysis of the susceptibility data indicates that SmH~2~ is the Sm^3+^ compound.
