✦ Synopsis
KLnTiO 4 (Ln ؍ La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy), a new series of n ؍ 1 Ruddlesden+Popper phases, was synthesized by a two-step ion-exchange reaction. HLnTiO 4 was 5rst prepared by traditional acid exchange of NaLnTiO 4 , and the KLnTiO 4 series was subsequently formed from the reaction of HLnTiO 4 with hot aqueous KOH. The ion exchange is stoichiometric, and the KLnTiO 4 phases are thermally stable to at least 7003C. All the KLnTiO 4 phases are orthorhombic and crystallize in space group Pbcm. The structures of KSmTiO 4 , KEuTiO 4 , KGdTiO 4 , and KDyTiO 4 were re5ned by the Rietveld method and found to be isostructural with their NaLnTiO 4 precursors. All the KLnTiO 4 phases form stable hydrates when exposed to a humidi5ed atomosphere.
