✦ Synopsis


A practical method of recovery of lead from wastewaters (primary effluents), avoiding its environmental effects, could be based on photoassisted semiconductor catalysis. The photooxidation of Pb(l1) has been studied at pH < 4 using a photocatalyst composed of Ti& (anatase) loaded with Pt deposits. A kinetic study has been carried out considering the different mass transfer and chemical kinetic steps. The pH and Pb(I1) concentration do not affect the reaction rate. A first-order relationship describes the influence of the oxygen partial pressure upon the rate. A reaction mechanism has been postulated using the heterogeneous catalysis theory; the rate-limiting step seems to be the reduction of oxygen adsorbed on the catalyst surface.
