โœฆ Synopsis

The kinetics of segregation to surfaces in ternary and binary alloys is investigated by computer simulation. It is shown that, in typical alloy systems, segregation occurs much more rapidly than predicted by the McLean equation which applies only in the dilute limit.

A simplified model of impurity induced temper embrittlement is developed assuming that the metal can be represented by a one dimensional chain of atoms where a tight-binding first nearest neighbour basis is used. The grain boundary is represented by a point occupied by an impurity. The model predict

Grain boundary segregation of impurities like P, S, Sb, and others is the origin of temper embrittlement of low-alloy steels. Till now it has been assumed that the segregation is determined by an equilibrium segregation mechanism, but some open questions cannot be satisfactorily explainedby the equi
