The Oow Chemical Co., M i d l a n d , M I 48640 USA A b s t r a c t -The k i n e t i c s o f t h e r e a c t i o n o f t e r t i a r y amines w i t h v i n y l 2 b e n z y l c h l o r i d e (VBC) copolymer l a t e x e s have been i n v e s t i g a t e d . I n t h i s r e a c t i o n , b e n z y l c h l o r i d e groups on t h e l a t e x p a r t i c l e s a r e c o n v e r t e d i n h i g h y i e l d t o q u a t e r n a r y ammonium groups. The course o f t h e r e a c t i o n i s d e t e r m i n e d by amine r e a c t i v i t y r a t h e r t h a n s o l u b i l i t y .

The k i n e t i c s a r e c o m p l i c a t e d by a severe r e t a r d a t i o n e f f e c t d e v e l o p i n g a t c o n v e r s i o n s i n excess o f 30%. The l i m i t i n g c o n v e r s i o n appears t o be a s s o c i a t e d w i t h t h e maximum charge d e n s i t y t h a t can be t o l e r a t e d on a hydrophobic p a r t i c l e .
