Using an isothermal flow reactor of annular configuration, the rates of carbon deposition from CH4 and C,O, have been measured over the respective temperature ranges, 1168Β°-13720K and 900"-1025Β°K. Under the experimental conditions employed, deposition from both of these compounds is found to be cont

β¦ Synopsis
The influence of the contact tinle and the surface-to-volume ratio (S/l') in thr reaction zone on pyrolytic carbon formation was investigated during methane pyrol) sis in a flow system. The experiments were carried out within the temperature inter\ al of 815-llOO"C, the S/V ratio ranging from 1.5,'cm to IO'/cm. It was found that at S/V 5 IO"/cm the homogeneous reaction was depressed, and that the rate of pyrolytic carbon formation was proportional to the surface area.
At S/V <20/cm an autoaccelerating period of the reaction was observed. The steady rate of pyrolytic carbon formation related to the surface unit was independent of the S/V ratio under conditions 01 helerogeneous pyrolysis of methane, and was inverseI) proportional to the %L' ratio under conditions of homo-heterogeneous reacting. The I-ates obtained untle~. the lattr~. conditions were by a factor of lo'-10 greater than those obtained under heterogeneou\ pyrolysis. Results are analyzed on the basis of a kinetic, model which postulates ;I radic.al mechanism for both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions and transition of r;cdic, als from the gas phase to the surface. The model i\ supported b) the litel-atur-c (lata.

## Abstract Activated carbon of surface area 1250 m^2^/g was impregnated with 4% sodium hydroxide plus 3% Cr(VI) as CrO~3~ with and without 5% ethylenediamine (EDA) and 5% ruthenium chloride by using their aqueous solutions. These carbons along with active carbon were studied for the adsorption of
