Chapter 1 and to some extent, again in Chapter 5. Similar criticism could be applied to the chapter on gasification. It would have been possible, therefore, to have reduced the size of the book without any loss of content. Further savings in this direction could have been made regarding the coal overview section which is so general and rudimentary that it adds little to the book as a whole, and in view of the likely readership, its necessity could be questioned. Despite these comments, the book provides a useful reference source for anyone with an interest in synthetic fuels, be it the professional engineer, student or layman with aspirations to gain an understanding of synfuels. It contains a wealth of data and information and the material has been well researched and well prepared.
The binding appears well up to standard, the illustrations are clearly reproduced and the printing is clear, if rather small in some places; so at $45 it is not cheap and may be beyond many potential individual purchasers. It is nevertheless worth the price and will be a useful addition to many libraries.
