✦ Synopsis

Other Compounds.-In addition to the amino acids and the agents tabulated in Table 11, catechol, aniline, and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid were evaluated. None of these compounds altered the rate of the reaction.

EXPERIMENTAL

Reagents.-All chemicals used in the preparation of the buffers and the kinetic solutions were analytical reagent grade with the exception of the catalytic agents tested. These compounds were all purified by recrystallization from suitable sol- vents prior to use.

Analytical Procedure.-Residual thiamine was determined by the U.S.P. XVI (7) thiochrome method. All substances added to the system were checked for interference with the assay method.

Kinetic Procedure.-The procedure for the kinetic runs was identical with that previously described REFERENCES (1).

The oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the presence of activated carbon particles has been studied experimentally in slurries of both pure water and sulfuric acid solutions. In the water slurries, the oxidation of absorbed molecular SO2 is accompanied by parallel oxidation of HSO~ ions produced by

The rates of oxidation of four a-keto acids, glyoxylic, pyruvic, phenylglyoxylic, and 2oxobutyric acids by Cerium(1V) in H2S04-HaHS04 and HzS04-HC104 solutions, have been studied spectrophotometrically. The rate data suggest that CeSO:' is the most reactive of the Cerium(1V)-sulfate complexes presen

The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction between nitrous acid and bromine are studied in dilute sulfuric acid medium, using both the stopped-flow method and conventional spectrophotometry. The partial reaction order with respect to Br 2 moderately differs from 1, showing a saturation at a higher c
