Abstract

The results of studies on the kinetics of reaction of 1 mol of parabanic acid (imidazolidine‐2,4,5‐trione) with 1 mol of ethylene oxide (oxirane) or propylene oxide (2‐methyloxirane) carried out in the presence of triethylamine catalyst in dimethylsulfoxide solution are presented. A rate equation describing the reaction is presented and the mechanism proposed. The validity of the proposed mechanism is proved by instrumental analytical methods. The effect of temperature is also presented and the thermodynamic parameters of the reaction evaluated. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet 35: 73–80, 2003
