โฆ Synopsis
Pure graphitizable carbons have been prepared from polyvinyl acetate at heat treatment temperatures (HTT) of 1200-3200K. Carbons doped with V, Cr, Mn, Fe and Co, by additions of organometallic compounds to the vinyl acetate monomer, of HTT 12OOK, were also prepared. Carbons from acenaphthylene, H'lT 12OOK, and polyfurfuryl alcohol, HTT 1200. 2lOOK and a spectroscopically pure graphite were used as comparisons. Rates of gasification of these carbons in oxygen, 1.33 kPa, were studied in the temperature range 72%1010K and in carbon dioxide, 6.7 kPa, 790-1175K, using a vacuum microbalance. Rates of gasification decrease with increasing HTT of the PVA carbon. Activation energies increase with increasing HTT, without passing through a maximum. Rates of gasification increase following doping with metals. Activation energies of the catalyzed reactions are either the same as for pure carbons or show an increase. Pure graphitizable carbons of equal HTT may not gasify similarly. The catalvtic behaviour of Fe is comolex. The compensation effect appears to operate in gasification reactions of doped graphitizable carbons.
