✦ Synopsis
Ah&act-The reactions of iron oxide (45 wt.% FQO,, 55 wt.% SiO,) with a hot gas containing Hz, CO and Hz!3 were investigated over a temperature range of 60&9OU'C. Preliminary studies indicated initial fast reduction of FezOa to spongy iron, which reacted slowly with the H2S to form iron sulfide. Hence, reduction with H&O mixture and subsequent sulfidation with I&S were studied separately. Results of experiments in a thermogravimetric analyzer are reported. The data are correlated using the gain model. The intrinsic rate constants are obtained from the data on the reactions of smallest particles at low conversions, and the effective d&sivities estimated from the data on the reactions of pellets. The activation energies for reduction and sulfidatioo are found to be 14.8 and 3.3 kcallmole, respectively. The overall rate for any particle size could then be represented by an approximate equation obtained essentially by the summation of the two resistances, chemical reaction. and pore diffusion.
