✦ Synopsis

The apparent reversibility of redox reactions between adsorbed reactants and products in square-wave voltammetry (SWV) depends on the kinetic parameter defined as the ratio of the standard rate constant and the frequency. If the experimental ratio of the SWV peak current and the frequency depends parabolically on the inverse frequency, the standard rate constant, k,, can be calculated from the critical frequency f,,, which corresponds to the maximum of this parabola, using the equation k, = K f max In* The theoretically calculated critical kinetic parameter K,,, depends on the transfer coefficient, (Y, and a square-wave amplitude. The values of K,, are reported. The rate constant and (Y of the adsorbed azobenzene-hydrazobenzene redox reaction, determined at pH 4.7 in acetate buffer, are 97 f 11 SC' and 0.20, respectively.

Probucole is both electroactive and a surface-active compound. It undergoes fast and chemically reversible reduction at a HMD electrode in either 0.1 mol dm À3 KClO 4 or 1 mol dm À3 KNO 3 . Both probucole and its electrode reduction product are strongly adsorbed to the electrode surface and the over
