✦ Synopsis
UPS and XPS are used to show that the reactions of 3-20 eV CO+ beams with a Ni(ll1) surface in a UHV system PO_ duce surface carbonyl at 3 eV, atomic oxygen and carbon surface species at 20 eV, and a mixture of these products at intermediate energies. The yields of these products as a function of kinetic energy are derived and potential energy diagrams are used to discuss the energetics of CO reactions on Ni.
