✦ Synopsis

In this novel of exile, first published in 1938, the narrator is 10-year-old Kully, who tells the story of her exciting life as an emigrant. Her reckless father, a writer addicted to gambling and extravagance, is often in debt; her loving mother is often alone with her daughter. In an artless narrative voice, naive, clear, and comic, Kully describes the restless, rootless, but adventure-filled life that she leads as she travels throughout Europe and even as far as America.
